The DNV Council is one of the governing bodies of the Norwegian Foundation Det Norske Veritas, the parent company of the DNV Group.

The Board of Directors, being the supreme governing body of the Foundation, has delegated specific parts of its authority to the Council as made possible through the Norwegian Foundation Act.

The responsibility of the Council is detailed in the DNV statutes. Some principal functions of the Council are:

• To appoint the Chairman and the members of the DNV Board of Directors
• To approve ammendments to the DNV Statutes, based on proposals from the DNV Board of Directors
• Through its own appointed members to execute the functions of the DNV Control committee
• To be at disposal for the Board of Directors and the CEO when required.

The Council currently has 40 members and one honorary member. The Chairman of the Council is Mr. Trond Harald Klaveness.

The Council is structured to ensure that no single group has decisive control. The majority of the members of the Council are appointed by external organisations. Seven members are appointed by the Council itself. These members represent stakeholders, users, customers and other parties interested in DNV services. They come from the marine insurance, shipping, oil and gas and other industry sectors. Six members are elected by and among DNV employees worldwide. Board members and the CEO cannot serve as members of the Council.

The Council meets twice every year, once in May/June and once in October.

The Control Committee
The Council appoints from its own members, three members of the Control Committee. The Control Committee shall supervise the Foundation's finances, accounts and audit activities and shall to such extent as it may find necessary inspect records, correspondence, accounting vouchers and other information. Members of the Control Committee cannot hold any other position in the Foundation than their membership of the Council.

The Election Committee
The Council appoints from its own members, five members to the Election Committee. The Chairman of the Council is the Chairman of the Election Committee. The Election Committee proposes candidates for seats to be appointed by the Council, most importantly members of the Board of Directors. Members of the Election Committee cannot hold any other position in the Foundation than their membership of the Council.
